Geocaching and Education
Welcome back to another installment into this geocaching adventure. I know I was really excited about the iNaturalist app... and I still am, but I have found another amazing app that will aid in your adventures. I understand that geocaching is a "treasure hunt" for pre-hidden treasures, but nature also provides with uncountable amounts of treasures. You just have to get up and go find them. The new app is called Seek by iNaturalist. In this app you can take pictures of an animal, plant, or fungi and it will identify what you are looking at! This was a lot of fun on our hike! From here on out I will be armed with both apps to find and identify all kinds of cool stuff... but like in the video... ( I hope it works) if you get a question wrong, you have to get stronger! I hope this new app motivates you to get up and go find it! Thanks for stopping by, me and my strong Ranger are off on another adventure!

Andy,
ReplyDeleteI like this app, I have used it for a while now. It comes in handy on camping trips. Me and my kids have always taken a two week camping trip in the summer. This app comes in handy when you are in a new state, running around the woods. Helps you not set up your tent in something that will make you itch and ruin your trip. Another app that we used just as much on these trips was fish brain. When you are near water fishing is a must. It helps to know what you caught and if it is better for the environment to throw it back or if it is a problem fish and better to eat them.
Andy,
ReplyDeleteWe have downloaded the app and are ready to head off on an adventure. I will definitely come in handy next spring when we head back up to Lincoln National Forrest on the weekends for camping to escape the El Paso heat. My daughter is at that age where she is curious about everything and asks me to identify everything, glad this app can help with that. The only thing I am curious about and will have to test is whether or not it has a locally stored database or it requires cellular data. In Lincoln National Forrest cell service can be elusive. Thanks again.

Andy,
ReplyDeleteThis is the other Andy...your blog benefits many people that enjoy the outdoors or just want to get out of their house and do something. The best part is you make it a family adventure and not something you have to do for a grade in a class. I can't think to wonder if your blog sparks many ideas for others to get out a try the geocaching outside of our cohort?
Do you see a lot of other families out there in them woods (or this case desert)?

Andy,
ReplyDeleteI was not certain what value or impact geocaching could have on education until I started following your blog. Now, after following your blog over the last several weeks, I have to say I find a lot of value in this technology from both a personal and professional standpoint. This technology is the perfect addition, in my opinion, to a geology, animal science, or fitness class. It is a unique way to get students engaged in the learning process. I have learned a lot from each one of the applications you have shared over the weeks. I intend on continuing to use your creative lesson plans to stay active with my own family and learn along the way. I also plan on keeping this technology and the applications in mind as I enter the ID profession. I plan on possibly doing the ID job once I leave the military so chances are this could come in handy professionally as well. Thanks for all the information and valuable insights over the course of the last few weeks.

Andy,
ReplyDeleteGreat pics of you and your family getting out and exploring. That app sounds awesome! I have been out hiking several times and had my eye caught by something just to ask myself “what the heck is that?” Feeling out of my element, I most often just wandered off without an answer. This app sounds like it would do me some good. My wife loves birds but is still pretty limited on her species identification skills. This would be great for her to be able to identify and learn more about them. Great post Andy.

Andy, I have both apps on my phone and I will definitely be using Seek this afternoon on my walk. It can work even without internet which I think is pretty cool and would come in handy during a survival situation. My Grandpa and I used to go hiking when I was a kid and he always pointed out what could be eaten as well as what to stay away from. Another great post. Between you and Tammy I have a bunch of new apps that I know will come in handy over the holiday break. Thank you Andy!

Andy,
ReplyDeleteI want to thank you on yet another great post. I can say that you have engaged my use of apps, especially for thing that I normally would not have thought to use them for. I use an all not that helps me identify plants that previously it would try to just google it. Most of the time it was too cumbersome and you may or may not find it. The app is called plantNet, I love the simplicity of taking a picture and receiving all of the information that comes for around the world of what it is. Users are able to input information and descriptions. Things like this make me feel that the world is not so big and we can all enjoy the same things virtually.
Thanks!
Walt
Andy,
ReplyDeleteThat is a great way to learn about nature. The best thing about the iNaturalist app is that you can record and share your observations so that others can learn more about nature as well. Who knows, maybe you'll discover something new or something that has evolved. You never know. Thanks for sharing!
Andy,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. This looks very interesting for an outdoor type of person. This really looks like a great app that will have the family fully engaged and sounds fun at the same time. I think technology is just getting better and better and with the aid of the technology makes things more interesting in my opinion. It a fun way to get out the house with all the isolation we have been having to endure. This makes it easy to go enjoy the outdoors while continuing to be safe and gets families involved so they can share and have times together. Great Post and Again thank you for sharing.
